SAU Residence
SAU Residence is a newly completed three-storey townhouse located in a dense suburban neighborhood of Jakarta, where tall boundary walls tightly define the edges of most residential sites. Measuring 10.5 x 22 meters and oriented directly west, the site presented both spatial and climatic challenges that shaped the design approach.
he client requested a home that balances contemporary living with Feng Shui principles — a place that is animal-friendly, spiritually harmonious, and spatially efficient. The program includes three bedrooms, a dedicated Yoga/Pilates studio, and an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area — with the kitchen as the heart of the home, reflecting the client’s profession as a chef. The design also features a rooftop entertaining space for family gatherings and year-end barbecues. To accommodate the client’s ageing parents, the living room is placed on the ground floor for easy accessibility. Working closely with a Feng Shui consultant, the layout was carefully organized: bedrooms are positioned toward the rear for tranquility, while the living and dining areas occupy the central zone — the most auspicious part of the house. Ancillary spaces were placed toward the front, where Feng Shui conditions were less favorable. This spatial hierarchy informed the façade composition. The lower levels present a monolithic and private expression, housing service areas and storage. As the house rises, the façade gradually opens up, culminating in a light, perforated upper volume featuring a custom sun-shading screen that filters the harsh western light and animates the interiors throughout the day. At the core of the house lies a vertical void — affectionately called the canyon — which visually and spatially connects all three levels. It channels natural light deep into the interior while fostering a sense of connection between family members across floors. If the kitchen is the heart of the home, the canyon is its spine — grounding the residence in both light and life.
