CRHK Residence
CHRK Residence is a newly completed family home located within a gated community near the coastal edge of North Jakarta. Set on a 22.5 x 29-meter site oriented toward the sea, the residence enjoys a rare context where the property overlooks the lush expanse of Ancol Recreational Park, offering uninterrupted views toward the Java Sea and the horizon beyond. A green corridor runs along its western boundary, creating a natural buffer that enhances privacy while enveloping the site in greenery.
The client wanted a light-filled, open-plan home inspired by coastal residences in Australia — a reference drawn from their years of living there. They wished to recreate that sense of ease, warmth, and connection to nature that characterizes Australian coastal living. The design brief called for a house that felt relaxed yet generous, with spaces that could adapt to family life and an internal lawn for children to play freely.
Taking full advantage of its unique setting, the house was conceived as a freestanding bungalow, unconstrained by boundary walls on all four sides — an uncommon condition in Jakarta’s urban fabric. The plan is organized around a series of courtyards of varying scales, which become the lungs of the house, drawing daylight deep into the interior and facilitating cross-ventilation.
On the ground floor, the living, dining, and kitchen areas, together with a home studio, revolve around the central courtyard. As this level has no direct view to the sea, the spaces open generously toward the green internal lawn, creating a strong visual and spatial connection to the landscape. A semi-outdoor double-height space blurs the boundary between inside and outside, framing views of the garden and allowing sea breezes to flow freely through the house.
The bedrooms are located on the second floor, oriented northward toward the sea to maximize views of the horizon and to capture the shifting light and atmosphere of the coastal setting. Above them, the third floor is designed as a wellness and leisure area with a sweeping 180-degree view of the sea beyond — a serene retreat by day and a prime vantage point for watching the city’s famous year-end fireworks celebrations over the nearby theme park.
The service wing is positioned at the front of the property as a separate yet connected entity. Linked to the main house through a naturally ventilated foyer, it allows functional separation while maintaining spatial coherence and cross-ventilation throughout. The result is a tranquil and breathable home that captures the essence of coastal living — open, verdant, and harmoniously attuned to its tropical setting.
